Article, Foggy Furze Folk Club, Friday, 23 September 2011    -   Another splendid guest night was enjoyed by all present, when our very own  local band, “On The Edge”, entertained us with a constant stream of classic and upbeat numbers, that had everyone singing along.  Guitars, a bass, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, penny whistles and shakers all contributed to make each song their own.  The one that really hit the spot was their take on a “Show of Hands” number, “Cousin Jack”.  Well done, guys and gal!

Make a note in your diary for our next Guest Night on 11 October 2011 with Hilary Blythe and Bob Hall. comment From Ian The Bob Hall Show consists of Bob on piano and vocals, and Hilary Blythe on bass and vocals “Britain’s leading blues and boogie woogie pianist” Yorkshire Post

Just to let you know, it’s Headland Folk Club night over at the Cosmopolitan this evening, 23 September 2011, where Barrie will be pleased to greet you.

So stay in touch with the folkie goings-on on www.foggyfurzefolk.com or chat to me on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com.  It’s only £1 on a singaround over at the FFFC or £2 for our guest nights.

I think every female member of the FFFC is still swooning after our mini-guest spot last week.  Brian Lewis lived up to musical expectations and finished the evening with James Taylor’s ‘You’re my Best Friend’.  Soft velvety voice, charismatic presence, totally understated, completely entertaining.   Our next guests over at the club, held in the Athenaeum, Church Street, Hartlepool, will be On the Edge, a local, upcoming, 4-piece band who play an eclectic selection of new, old, known and unknown for the entertainment of their audience.  They play next Tuesday, 13 September 2011, only £2 entry. Don’t forget to head for the Cosmopolitan this evening, Friday, 17 September 2011.  The summer break is over and we’re all ready for the new season at the Headland Folk Club.  Barrie will be there to welcome you and introduce the singing.                   There’s music over at the nursery each Monday with the Pools Folk and Acoustic Club and Skyran are to play over at Whitby Pirate Day on the bandstand at 4.00 pm on 17 September 2011.                It’s only £1 for a singaround night at the Foggy Furze Folk Club or £2 on a guest night and you’re always welcome.  We start at 8.30 each Tuesday.  To keep up to date with events why not check out our web site on www.foggyfurzefolk.com or get in touch with me on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com.

Lots going on again this fortnight with people all over the place with holidays and such like and this brings in people on their holidays who come to see what the Hartlepool folk clubs are like. Over at the Foggy Furze folk Club, held in the Atheneum Club in Church Street, Hartlepool, we’ve had lots of visitors over the last few weeks from Scotland and the East Midlands, one of whom is so good we’re giving him a spot next Tuesday, 30 August 2011.  His name is Brian Lewis and he has an excellent folk repertoire with a lovely baritone/bass voice and a skilled hand on the guitar.  Get yourself along, it’s pure velvet and an extra treat.

The band playing in our usual monthly spot is On the Edge, playing on 13 September 2011.  They’re really practising hard, they tell us, so should be a session with an eclectic mix of sounds, rounding up with a foot-stomping finish.

Don’t forget there’ll be music on over at the Fisherman’s Arms this weekend as an accompaniment to their Second Beer Festival.  They’ve got loads of different cask ales and, I’m reliably informed, even two cask ciders.  Could be a lot of sore heads this weekend. So much to see and do, you won’t know where to turn.  Don’t forget it’s only £1 on a singaround night at the FFFC and £2 for a guest night.  Keep in touch on www.foggyfurzefolk.com or get in touch with me on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com.  I’ll look forward to hearing from you.

Our next guests will be On The Edge and they  are a very rhythmic local band who will appear on 13 September 2011 so get in to see them and catch them while you can for only £2. NOT TO BE MISSED.

Today would usually be a Headland Folk Club Night but it’s on its summer break during August and shall return next month.  Barrie Archer shall be in house again at the Cosmopolitan at that time to help you entertain each other.  We’ll keep you posted through this column of course.

Hope you’ve got loads of get up and go cos there’s so much going on in Hartlepool you’re going to need it.

Over at the Foggy Furze Folk Club, we were roundly entertained by 2/3 of the Monkey Moonshine Band.  Whilst it was a different set to that planned, they carried it off with aplomb and carried the audience with them.  Might be worth considering doing that set more often – it certainly had everyone joining in.

The next guest to be at the FFFC is to be Cliff Healey who will play on Tuesday, 9 August 2011.

The Headland Folk Club is on this Friday, over at the Cosmopolitan.  It was a great evening last time so come along and help it repeat  itself.  You’re always made welcome.

Now the Nursery Inn isn’t open this Monday, 18th, but is back online on Monday, 25 July 2011 so get down there and enjoy a great night.

Skyran are next taking part in an event in support of Hartlepool & District Hospice on Saturday, 23 July 2011.  This is supported by Hornseys and Surfside over on the promenade at Seaton Carew and a further guest is J B Butterfield.

So don’t forget, fun down at the FFFC in the Atheneum Club in Church Street every week at 8.30 pm, only £1 on a singaround night, £2 for a guest night.  Performers and visitors always welcome.

We had a visit from Whitley Bay folk club this week and the mixture of talents and instruments which included pipes, harmonica, guitar, accordions, Bodhran, and a one string thing brough along by John promoted an excellent sing around and new friendships were made. We intend to visit Whitley Bay in September for a re run at their club. Thank for bringing the gang to Foggy Furze, we enjoyed it immensely. Next week we have local folk outfit Monkey Moonshine, a smashing outfit very pleasing on the ear who do a variety of genre including trad folk, contemporary folk, blues, country and no doubt a slice of pop, we are looking forward to what Yorkie, Brian Gerard and Diane have to serve up. come along and support live folk music at the Athenaeum on Tuesday 12 July , see you there.
